April 2014

A thick envelope is waiting for me at the ranch after my month-long hiatus in Alamos. Inside is a photo of Juan Carlos’s wife and two young children, his family. The little boy looks to be about five years old, and is dressed up in a blue plaid shirt and clean jeans. He has a rakish, toothy grin on his face, and his arms are around his mother’s neck. The child is standing on a rock border fence hugging his mother. I’m sure the person behind the camera has told the group to “smile.”

His daughter, about age three, is dressed in a party frock. She has neatly combed hair and a pensive half-smile. The woman, his wife, wears a brightly printed blouse and a light blue plaid skirt. She has a round face and a warm gaze as she looks into the camera. Her expression is engaging, but not happy. She does not smile. She looks tired and resigned. The three cling to each other. The photo looks like it was taken in a city with manicured shrubs and trees.

On the back of the photo is printed in pencil: “This is a souvenir for Margarita Peg Bowden. It is my family that lives in Guatemala. Take care of this special remembrance.”

There is a letter inside the envelope, written in careful cursive penciled on a yellow legal pad.
